Sitting Kills More than Smoking

smoking-sofa“We are sitting ourselves to death.” That’s according to a top scientist who carried out a study that claims sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting.

He is credited with coining that mantra, “sitting is the new smoking.” But he’s not the only one who believes it. Researchers have found and continue to find evidence that prolonged sitting increases the risk of developing serious illnesses, various types of cancer, heart disease and type two diabetes.

Scientists estimate that prolonged bouts of sitting are the equivalent of two to three packs a day.

SligoSligoNews spoke to Caroline O’Reilly about her husband’s habit. “When he was at work I think he was sitting for about six hours a day at his desk and then at home you can add another two or maybe three hours to that,” she said.

Things got worse for the O’Reilly household when Jim was made redundant last year.

“He did nothing but sit all day and all evening. He even started sleeping on the couch,” said a distraught Mrs O’Reilly.

He tried quitting several times but nothing worked. They tried a treadmill, a stationary bike. “We even bought one of those stand up chairs from the ergonomic shop – that was shite.” By all accounts sitting was a hard habit to break.

“A few times he said he was going out the back for a bit of stand and I would catch him, sitting on the low wall at the back,” Caroline stated. “He used to say it was just a low wall and surely it couldn’t be much harm, but now we know.”

The family bought a three-seater sofa from Havey Norman three years ago and Jim O’Reilly fell in love with it. Fighting back tears Caroline asked “what’s the government going to do about it? That’s what I want to know?”

It’s believed there are two million regular sitters in the state. The government has printed and distributed health warning stickers that can be stuck onto furniture.

Sadly SligoSligoNews learned that Jim “Jimbo” O’Reilly was taken last year.

“No he’s not dead,” said Caroline “he was taken away and put in jail for not paying off what was owed on the sofa.”
