The Big Wind

Some say it’s the end of the world as we know it. Others warn it’s the result of global warming – a once in a century event.

Hurricane Ophelia is on the way and with it we can expect gusts of 120 kilometres per hour. Maps of the country, frequently shown on TV, present swirling  red and purple coloured clouds. The forecasters and the government want to terrify the people. There may be a lot of damage and there may be some looting after it hits.

“Viene la tormenta,” said the kid at the end of Terminator. “He said, there’s a storm coming,” the old man translated.

Met Eireann says we can expect “high impact weather”. The coast guard warns that all coastal areas should be avoided. All we know here in Sligo is that Windy Ophelia is coming to visit. Let’s hope it’s not like the last time when she cleared the pub with a noxious fart.
